And just like that… the Spring season of Horizonte is a wrap.
I am so proud to host this groundbreaking Arizona PBS series. And this season – is one for the books!
Arizona’s new state Supreme Court Justice – Maria Elena Cruz – joined me to discuss becoming the first Latina and first Black Arizonan to sit on the state’s highest court and why her appointment is so important and reflective of our community.
I had an in-depth and emotional conversation with the remarkable Judy Robles, who is portrayed by Jennifer Lopez in the hit movie, “Unstoppable.” She shared the challenges she faced as a teen mom and that her son Anthony Robles – who was born with one leg – faced before becoming a Arizona State University wrestling champ.
We collaborated with Working Nation for special episodes of Horizonte featuring several of their exceptional film docs, covering issues like the shortage of Hispanic and Spanish speaking doctors across the country. We brought the issue home to Arizona with a deep discussion on Horizonte – and during a live community event – that included state health industry experts, doctors and medical students talking about the disparities and inequities this shortage creates for patients and health care professionals.
Horizonte is about educating and informing our community, while celebrating our rich culture and shining a light on those in our community who continue to make a difference.
