She is the OG on sooo many levels.
If any of you have been in the Valley long enough, perhaps you might remember she’s also the original “buddy” in the 12 News Buddy Check 12 breast cancer awareness program!
Back in 1993, I was anchoring and reporting at channel 12 when my news director decided to launch Buddy Check 12 and asked me to be “the face” of the campaign along with a “buddy”.
I of course chose my Mom, because – as I wrote in the promotional material – “My mom has always been my best friend.”
The station flew mom into town, we did photo shoots, she appeared on-air with me to talk about the importance of routine self-exams, and she was featured with me in promotional material both on air and in print. My mom was my biggest champion when I was starting out in the news biz so it was awesome to be able to include her in my work.
While looking through my scrapbooks for these photos, I came across dozens of letters and cards she sent me during those early years, reminding me that she always knew I had it in me and how proud I made her.
I’m so happy my “buddy” is still here, taking trips around the sun and making new memories.
